Woven into the spirit of the Vancouver Island coastlinelives a remarkable and elusive species; a coastal wolf sustained almost entirely by the sea. These wolves, often called ‘sea wolves’, belong to one of the world’s most unique populations of grey wolves, found only along British Columbia’s wild Pacific shores.

Thanks to the rich tapestry of coastal rainforests and nutrient-dense ocean waters, British Columbia is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife. Sea wolves are a living embodiment of this biodiversity; apex predators that play a crucial role in the health of their ecosystem, from regulating prey populations to enriching the forest with marine nutrients. Their existence is a poignant reminder of the urgent need to safeguard these interconnected, fragile habitats from harmful human activity.

The painting’s dominant use of blue speaks to the wolves’ deep connection to their ocean-fed environment. Its title, Guardian, refers both to the vigilant father watching over his playful pups, and to the role these wolves play as guardians of the land - silent stewards of balance, resilience, and wild beauty.
